Governor Tim Walz's "Cookie Salad"

The Harris-Walz campaign has been tactical with their recipes, prompting millions of folks on Instagram and elsewhere to donate in order to get recipes by Tim, Kamala, and even their partners. A hotdish, a ginger snap recipe, cornbread dressing — all sound delicious.

But Cookie Salad, a Tim Walz original, is not among them.

Why? I had to unravel the mystery of this “salad” myself as soon as I came upon it in my research for a day of eating like Tim Walz. Down the Jello rabbit hole we go…

As always, I followed the recipe word for word, no alterations:

INGREDIENTS

1 cup buttermilk

1 package Jello instant vanilla pudding

8-12oz of whipped cream or Cool Whip

1 can mandarin orange slices (drained)

1/2 container of Fudge Stripe cookies

INSTRUCTIONS

1) Mix together buttermilk and vanilla pudding.

Confession: the first time I did this, it did not work. Absolutely did not come together, and that is because I did not choose the correct package size. Apparently, it’s family-sized. I can only blame Tim.

2) Add whipped cream and mandarin oranges.

I did indeed choose whipped cream (which actually was listed as ‘whip cream’ in the original recipe).

3) Just before serving, crush half-package of fudge stripe cookies and mix in/sprinkle on top.

Voila! If you want to actually watch me attempt to eat it, go to the Cookin’ with Congress Instagram or TikTok. I left some big crumbles on top, but that’s on purpose. It looks much like a Snickers Salad, and if you’re from the Midwest, I’ve no doubt you’ve come across something like this hundreds and hundreds of times.

Verdict:

A bit too sweet for me, and I’d swap out oranges for berries of some sort. That said, I ate too much of it, so it isn’t gross.
